Objectives
The objectives of the Program are:
- Provide advanced training in masters and doctorate courses, training graduates for the production, application and transmission of knowledge in the field of ecology;
- Stimulate the approximation between ecological research and decision making in the environmental area, explaining the relations between epistemological and social values;
- Stimulate the ecology dialogue with other areas of academic knowledge.
Target Audience:
The Professional Master Course is for bachelor’s or equivalent degree in any area of knowledge, preferably active in the environmental field outside academia seeking qualification for production, application and transmission of knowledge in the field of ecology, in order to qualify their Practice.
The Academic Master Course is aimed at bachelor’s or equivalent degree in any area of knowledge who wish to be trained in the production, application and transmission of knowledge in the field of ecology, in order to obtain training in scientific research and teaching in this area.
The Academic Doctoral Course (PhD in Ecology) is aimed at candidates who has a master's degree in any area of knowledge and who wish to be trained in the production, application and transmission of knowledge in the field of ecology, in order to further deepen their training in scientific research And teaching in this area.
The lack of restriction regarding the area of knowledge of the previous training of the candidates reflects the Program's conception that ecological knowledge may be relevant to the academic performance of a diversity of professionals given the centrality of ecology in the environmental field.
Skills and abilities:
Professional Master:
a) Recognition of ecology as a set of traditions in production of scientific knowledge, which include particular values and social practices, associated with phenomena that are influenced by different levels of organization, spatial, and temporal scales;
b) Recognition of the interfaces between ecological science and environmental problems, particularly regarding the challenges and opportunities associated with the interaction with researchers from other disciplinary traditions and professionals from non-academic sectors, taking into account knowledge, social practices and values;
c) Ability to access and incorporate scientific knowledge from the field of ecology in the resolution of environmental problems related to their professional activity.
Academic Master Degree:
In addition to items (A) and (B) above;
d) Recognition of the interfaces between ecological science and environmental problems, particularly regarding the challenges and opportunities associated with the interaction of the ecologist with researchers from other disciplinary traditions and with professionals from non-academic sectors, taking into account knowledge, social practices and values;
e) Ability of appropriation of theories and methodologies associated to the field of ecology;
f) Capability to formulate relevant research questions in ecology and methodological strategies to answer them;
g) Ability to communicate and teaching ecological science.
Doctorate degree:
In addition to the deepening of items (a), (b), (d), (e), (f), and (g),
h) Development of scientific autonomy;
i) Deepening the understanding of ecological science from the history and philosophy of science;
j) Ability to monitor and evaluate research projects.
